V4 still exists, despite differences over Ukraine

February 29th, 2024

A pro-government agrees with PM Orbán who is urging a ceasefire and peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

In the headline to its report on the V4 summit in Prague on Tuesday, Hungary Today, an English language website describes the Prague meeting as a ’V2+2, rather than a V4 summit’. Quoting participants, it writes that although Poland and the Czech Republic are in favour of sending weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, while Slovakia and Hungary confine their assistance to humanitarian aid, they all agree that cooperation within the V4 group still makes sense.

In Magyar Nemzet, Levente Sitkei praises PM Orbán for tenaciously continuing to propose dialogue and ceasefire as the only realistic way to end the war in Ukraine. Great powers have more influence on the course of events than relatively small countries like Hungary, he writes, but adds that he doesn’t find the endeavours of the Hungarian government hopeless, as Hungary is not isolated in today’s world.
