Hungary’s immigrant workforce is growing

January 18th, 2024

Growing foreign direct investment and domestic full employment make it necessary for Hungary to receive an increasing number of guest workers from Asia.
On the Mandiner website, Gábor Nagy writes that Hungary will need about 500 thousand new workers within the next five years, as foreign direct investment reaches record figures. Given that the unemployment rate will sink below 4 percent this year, he believes only half of the new jobs will be filled by Hungarians. He puts the number of foreign, mainly Asian ‘guest workers’ at 100 thousand at present. Most of the newcomers are Filipinos and stay in Hungary with temporary residence permits.
