Hungary wants to be a ‘keystone state’, Balázs Orbán says

December 30th, 2023

A top strategy advisor to PM Orbán describes managing conflicts with the western world as a serious job for the next decade.

On Index, Balázs Orbán, political director at the Prime Minister’s office describes Hungary’s disagreements with its western allies as a consequence of the autonomous policies the Hungarian government has been pursuing for the past 13 years. Hungary can only be a keystone state if it does not simply conform to other countries, as the Left did when in government, he explains. ‘One of Hungary’s legs (meaning its ties with the West) is extremely muscular, while the other is still stunted’, Mr Orbán added. Thus, the two strategic challenges he sees facing Hungary are to develop ties with the East and manage conflicts with the West.
