Death of Prigozhin as sign of a strong dictatorship

August 25th, 2023

A pro-government commentator sees no evidence of cracks in the Putin regime.

On Mandiner, Mátyás Kohán takes it for granted that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner group was killed at the behest of President Putin. His mutiny two months ago was thus punished in pure dictatorial style. He dismisses speculations that the mutiny signalled the approaching end of President Putin’s rule in Russia. On the contrary, he suggests, Putin quietly removed from the chessboard General Surovikin, who apparently supported the mutiny, then got rid of Prigozhin himself. Hungarians, he writes, can now see what dictatorship is like and should be happy they live in a democracy.
