Hungary to host CPAC for 2nd time

April 7th, 2023

A pro-government analyst suggests that Hungary has become a catalyst for conservative forces in the world, with what he sees as its 13-year success story of conservative governance, challenging the international mainstream.

The government-funded Alapjogokért (For Basic Rights) think tank will host the Conservative Political Action Conference for the second time on May 5 and 6 in Budapest, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as the key speaker. Budapest was the first overseas venue of the American CPAC meeting last year (see BudaPost, May 21, 2022).

In Magyar Nemzet, Miklós Szánthó, director general of the Alapjogokért Centre says CPAC aims at ‘making the nightmare of liberals come true by promoting coordinated action by nation-centred forces’. Hungary, he explains, has followed its own path despite international pressure over the past 13 years. A growing number of Western conservatives Szánthó continues, have started asking themselves why they should be intimidated by political correctness, ‘once the Hungarians have made it’. Hungary’s success story, he says, is being appreciated by more and more partners, and ‘a right-wing network is gaining strength from the Danube to the Potomac’.
