On the passing of Gáspár Miklós Tamás

January 17th, 2023

The iconic Marxist philosopher remembered on both Left and Right.

Mérce mourns Tamás, a teacher and regular contributor to the alt-left online media outlet. Mérce praises the left-wing philosopher’s original style and uncompromising search for truth.

In Magyar Nemzet, László Szentesi Zöldi remembers Gáspár Miklós Tamás as a rare left-wing intellectual who did not crave power and money – unlike others, he suggests, within the SZDSZ, the now defunct liberal party where Tamás started his political career. The conservative columnist believes that Tamás believed in Marxist ‘fictions’, including social justice, because he was raised as a Calvinist. Meanwhile, he continues, Tamás also espoused the ideas of the new left, and although Zöldi believes that his views have lost their appeal, he sees him as one of the last intellectuals on the Left whose essays were still worth reading by those on the Right.
