Energy price compensation for local councils
January 5th, 2023A pro-government commentator lambasts the Democratic Coalition for alleging that the government denies energy price compensation subsidies to districts that elected left-wing mayors.
Magyar Nemzet’s Tamás Pilhál rejects as outrageous the contention of former PM Gyurcsány’s Democratic Coalition that the government is penalizing districts that elected left-wing mayors by not offering them compensation for their energy bills. Pilhál recalls that the government opened a 44 billion HUF fund to help local councils struggling to pay high energy bills, provided they prepare an energy saving plan. Five Democratic Coalition municipal mayors boycotted the project, did not submit applications, and therefore did not receive funding. The pro-government commentator maintains that those districts led by left-wing mayors who did apply were offered compensation. Pilhál interprets the accusations levelled at the government by the Democratic Coalition as irresponsible and absurd, adding that the Democratic Coalition is willing to harm even the interests of its own voters – if it expects a political benefit from such stunts.
