Ruminations on Putin’s Victory Day address

May 11th, 2022

A conservative commentator dismisses Russian President Putin’s Victory Day speech, as a collection of ‘big fat ideological lies’  aimed at sustaining the ‘phantasm’ of a just war in Ukraine – to motivate those Russians who still believe it.

On Mandiner, Mátyás Kohán sees the Russian President’s Victory Day message as an empty and false ideological tale. The conservative commentator writes that many Western mainstream media incorrectly assumed that Putin would announce something important on the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Instead, Kohán continues, the Russian President came up with ‘big fat lies’ to justify his assault on Ukraine – including the claim that a pre-emptive strike was necessary to prevent NATO from launching an attack on Russia. He goes on to stress that Putin’s highly ideological lies were intended to motivate Russians who still believe that the war on Ukraine serves a just cause. Kohán concludes by dismissing Western claims that Ukraine is a democratic country fit to be integrated into Europe, as another ideological myth, put forward in order to motivate Ukrainians to defend their country.
