Ruminations on French Presidential elections

April 13th, 2022

A conservative columnist suggests that the Hungarian government will maintain sound pragmatic relations with France – regardless which candidate wins the Presidential election run-off.

Commenting on the first round of the French Presidential elections, Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry believes that the Hungarian government can cooperate with either candidate who made it into the second round. The pro-government columnist recalls that Prime Minister Orbán and liberal President Macron maintain a pragmatic relationship despite their deep ideological differences. Although President Macron and Mr Orbán have very different visions of Europe, the two politicians voted together in the European Council on several issues, Őry notes. She goes on to add that Marine Le Pen’s victory could revive the cooperation of European right-wing parties, now on hold due to disputes over the Ukraine war.
