Fidesz appears to be ahead in electoral race

February 9th, 2022

A liberal author reports that, just 54 days before the parliamentary elections, Fidesz stands a fair chance of defeating the opposition. She estimates that the governing party will do so by winning roughly the same number of votes for its national list, whilst reaping more mandates from individual constituencies.

On hvg.hu, Judit Windisch calculates that Fidesz can be highly confident of winning in 51 of the 106 individual constituencies, while the opposition only stands a realistic chance of coming first in 47. All in all, she identifies 32 battleground constituencies, but suggests that Fidesz is the more probable winner in 20 of these. Meanwhile, she finds the Hódmezővásárhely constituency as particularly important, because the local Mayor and opposition candidate for Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay will face former Mayor and Cabinet Minister János Lázár there. Defeat in that duel, she writes, might bring the political career of either candidate to an end.
