PM Orbán re-elected vice-president of the Christian Democratic International
November 2nd, 2021A pro-government columnist describes it as highly symbolic that all three vice presidents of the Christian Democratic International are central European leaders, namely prime ministers Viktor Orbán of Hungary, Janez Janša of Slovenia and Andrej Plenković of Croatia.
Magyar Nemzet’s Levente Sitkei finds it telling that the global Christian democratic organisation that unites 94 parties from 73 countries implicitly endorsed the policies of three Central European leaders. Without mentioning that Fidesz felt compelled to leave the European People’s Party, a division of the Christian Democratic International, Sitkei suggests that Europe’s Christian Democrats have become liberals without an ideology, while their counterparts in Central European countries take Christianity seriously. He admits that the former communist countries have a long way to go before catching up with the West in terms of living standards, however, ‘people won’t live by bread alone’, he remarks, quoting Matthew’s gospel.
