Márki-Zay described as a demagogue

November 20th, 2021

A pro-government pundit bitterly attacks the opposition front-runner and frames him as a straw man socialised in American big business and run by rich Hungarians.

In Magyar Nemzet, Ottó Gajdics pokes fun at the opposition candidate for prime minister, who opposes the current government’s policy of freezing energy and fuel prices, and proposes lowering energy consumption instead. In an ironic remark, the pro-government columnist asserts that Márki-Zay would advise Hungarians to walk barefoot if shoes became too expensive. He believes the opposition candidate is therefore not left-wing, though he is also not right wing, because he sides with the Hungarian left. Gajdics describes Márki-Zay as a ‘political parachutist’, dropped in from the West, a ‘peddler trained at the helm of multinational companies’ whose campaign is financed by wealthy Hungarians. The column is entitled ‘the Gyurcsány clone”.
