Eucharistic Congress opens in Budapest

September 7th, 2021

Both a pro-government and an opposition-leaning commentator recognize the importance of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress underway in Budapest, and underline that love is Christ’s number one message. The former refrains from referring to political matters, while the latter allows himself a slight hint at modern politics.

In Magyar Hírlap, former Fidesz MP Tamás László complains that In today’s secularised world, religious rituals are often mocked, and the ones to show gratitude for the blessings in our lives are rarely practiced. He hopes that the Eucharistic Congress will be an important event in promoting Jesus’s main message: that of love and unconditional forgiveness.

In Népszava, Gábor Czene, a former Népszabadság columnist specialising in ecclesiastical affairs recalls the earlier Eucharistic Congress organised in Budapest in 1938. That time, he writes, the message of love didn’t prove long lasting. Let’s hope, he concludes, that love will this time spread far and wide – if not throughout the world, at least in Hungary.
