Pro-government reaction to Dobrev’s nomination
May 5th, 2021A right-wing commentator predicts that the Left will lead an unscrupulous campaign to win the elections next year and urges the government side to respond in kind.
In Magyar Nemzet, György Berszán recalls that the opposition won over Budapest and other cities at the mayoral election in 2019 after what he calls a character assassination campaign against Zsolt Borkaim, the Mayor of Győr (see e.g. BudaPost, November 8, 2019). He sees the humiliation of former Fidesz MEP József Szájer (see BudaPost, December 7, 2020) as a similar move, supported this time by the international allies of the Hungarian Left. Berszán encourages the pro-government side to shed their frustrations and show their strength. No further concessions, gentleman-like attitudes or tactical retreats are admissible, he writes. ‘Victory is in the opposite direction’.
