A conservative vision of the EU

May 12th, 2021

As the Conference on the Future of Europe kicks off, a pro-government columnist calls on the EU leadership to respect subsidiarity as a European value.

Commenting on the year-long Conference on the Future of Europe, which opened on Sunday, Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry suggests that the pandemic has once again shown that nation-states are more efficient than the European Union. The pro-government columnist writes that national governments have proven far more efficient at crisis management than leadership from Brussels. She also accuses the EU of putting the interests of ‘economic migrants’ before the legitimate concerns of European citizens about welfare, security and jobs. She suggests that the EU should respect subsidiarity and should not tinker with issues that can be handled more efficiently by nation-states. As for Hungary, Őry fears that if the opposition were to emerge as victors of the 2022 elections, the resulting left-wing government would compromise Hungarian sovereignty and the national interest.
