Heated dispute over vaccination

March 2nd, 2021

As the third wave of the pandemic hits Hungary, a respected surgeon calls for ethical proceedings against GPs who hesitate to recommend the Chinese jab to patients. A left-wing columnist, on the other hand, criticizes the government for using the epidemic for political purposes.

In Magyar Nemzet, the renowned neuro surgeon András Csókay, in an open letter to the chairman of the Hungarian Chamber of Doctors, calls for those GPs who, to his knowledge, discourage their patients from taking the Chinese coronavirus vaccine, to face ethical proceedings. Csókay dismisses doubts about the safety and efficacy of the Chinese jab. Doctors who discourage patients, he maintains, violate medical ethics in order to undermine the Orbán government’s efforts to keep the epidemic at bay.

Népszava’s Róbert Friss accuses the government of mismanaging mass vaccination. The left-wing commentator writes that while the government criticizes the EU for its slow vaccination rollout, at the same time it fails to properly inform the Hungarian public about the vaccination plan, and did not even make the necessary arrangements to help GPs  inoculate the public.
