LMP joins opposition alliance

December 8th, 2020

A pro-government commentator interprets the decision of the Politics Can Be Different Party to join the opposition cooperation in the 2022 election to mean that former PM Gyurcsány ‘now has full control’ of the opposition parties.

On Saturday, Politics Can Be Different (LMP) announced that they would join the forming opposition alliance rather than running separately in the 2022 election. The LMP explained the decision, writing that their primary aim is to “restore fair party competition and defeat Fidesz”.

Magyar Nemzet’s Dávid Megyeri comments on the announcement, suggesting that the LMP has now completed its U-turn and the abandonment of its founding principles by joining the opposition cooperation. The pro-government columnist believes that all opposition parties that joined the agreement are subservient to the ‘pro-dictatorship’ former PM Gyurcsány. Megyeri believes that Ferenc Gyurcsány now has full control of the opposition. In an aside, Megyeri suggests that the broad opposition alliance may fail after all, bearing in mind that the joint party list can only get into Parliament if it gets at least 5 per cent of the votes multiplied by the number of parties that support it, and therefore the more parties join, the higher its threshold will be.
