EPP leader Tusk calls Hungary a ’degenerate democracy’

October 28th, 2020

A pro-government commentator suggests that Donald Tusk and liberals in the EU criticize Hungary and accuse its government of violating basic EU norms, simply in order to divert attention from the EU’s failure to cope with the coronavirus.

Donald Tusk, head of the European People’s Party, said in an interview with Radio Free Europe that Prime Minister Orbán’s illiberal democracy is in fact a ‘degenerate democracy’. Foreign Minister Szijjártó rejected the accusation, and said that just as Mr Tusk is failing to help the EU overcome the coronavirus pandemic, he failed as a politician in Poland a well.

In Magyar Hírlap, Mariann Őry agrees with the government that Donald Tusk’s criticism is just smoke and mirrors intended to conceal the spike in coronavirus infections and deaths in the European Union. The pro-government commentator contends that Donald Tusk’s accusations, along with the ongoing dispute over rule of law conditionality, are intended to divert attention from the EU’s failure to contain the coronavirus and its economic implications. Őry concludes by claiming that Mr Tusk’s words will further weaken the EPP.
