Debate about domestic violence

February 1st, 2020
A left-wing author accuses the government of inaction against intra-family violence, while the Minister of Justice rebukes the charges.

In 168 Óra, Dóra Ónody-Molnár condemns the government for refusing to submit the Istanbul Convention on Domestic Violence to Parliament for ratification. She points out that about 51 wives are murdered by their husbands annually in Hungary, and the statistics are not improving. Authorities tend to ignore complaints by women until it is too late, she writes.

On Mandiner, Justice Minister Judit Varga says Hungary has inserted all the provisions corresponding to the Istanbul Convention in its criminal code. The government, she explains,  nevertheless opposes the ratification of the Convention because it contains passages legitimizing boundless migration and promoting unconventional forms of the family. She quotes the report of the committee supervising compliance with the Convention which condemns Italy’s former government for its refusal to allow groups of African migrants onto its territory as well as for prioritizing the traditional family structure.
