Pro-government commentator calls on Borkai to step down

October 23rd, 2019

A political analyst urges Győr mayor Zsolt Borkai to step down from politics, as his continued public presence harms Fidesz, even though he quit the party.

In Magyar Nemzet, Tamás Fricz calls on Győr mayor Zsolt Borkai to step down. The pro-government analyst contends that Borkai, who was involved in a sex scandal (see BudaPost through October 8) should have respected basic values and norms as a member of Fidesz. Borkai has already quit the party, but he remained mayor of the city of Győr, after narrowly winning the municipal election on 13 October. Fricz writes that Borkai violated the Christian and family-centric values Fidesz endorses. He thinks that it is not enough that Borkai was forced to hand in his membership in the governing party (see BudaPost October 21). In his view, Borkai has to leave public life altogether, because if he stays on, he will do yet more harm to Fidesz.
