Hungarian Jews are ‘safer’ than in western Europe

June 12th, 2019

A pro-government commentator claims that, thanks to the government’s migration policies, there has been no surge in anti-Semitic attacks in Hungary. While Jews are leaving Western Europe en masse, he writes, Hungarian Jews are safe.

In Magyar Nemzet, László Szőcs suggests that the situation of Hungarian Jews is improving. The pro-government columnist recalls that after the 1989 democratic changes, anti-Semitic instances occurred in Hungary. Hungarian Jews, on the other hand, have been hostile to the Hungarian Right and also to the idea of nationalism, and supported European unification hoping that it would weaken anti-Semitism. As a result of mass migration to Europe, anti-Semitism in Western Europe has surged, and in several western European cities, Jews are then targets of violent attacks and terrorist acts, Szőcs underlines. He adds that masses of Jews are leaving Western European countries due to growing anti-Semtism and anti-Jewish violence. In contrast, Jews in Hungary are safe, and anti-Semitic attacks have not increased significantly, he contends. Szőcs suspects that this will make Jews appreciate Hungary more than ever before.
