Criticism of US policy towards Iran

June 25th, 2019

A left-wing and a pro-government columnist ponder the lessons of the skirmish between Washington and Teheran, and the chances of a US-Iran military conflict.

In Népszava, János Kárpáti finds US President Trump’s policy improvised and unprofessional. The left-wing commentator accuses President Trump of putting his re-election objectives before US geopolitical interests. Commenting on his decision to cancel an airstrike against Iran a couple of minutes before the planes took off, Kárpáti accuses the US leader of making intuitive decisions without consulting his aides.

Magyar Nemzet’s László Szőcs points out that the US-Iran skirmish may have implications for the whole Middle East. The pro-government pundit believes that the unfolding of the Iran situation may impact the Israeli election as well as global oil prices. Szőcs also suggests that President Trump seems to be concerned first and foremost with his image, rather than with the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. In a passing remark, Szőcs predicts that US pressure on Iran will only entrench the power and legitimacy of the Iranian government. As for the prospect of an armed conflict, Szőcs recalls that Iran is far stronger and bigger both in economic and military terms than Iraq, Pakistan or even Israel.
