31 years of Fidesz

April 4th, 2019

A young conservative blogger looking back on the history of Fidesz contends that the Hungarian governing party has been consistent with its core values ever since its establishment.

On Mandiner, Kristóf Trombitás looks back on the history of Fidesz on the occasion of the 31st birthday of the Hungarian governing party. The conservative pundit dismisses widespread accusations that Fidesz has completely changed over three decades. Trombitás acknowledges that Fidesz has been ideologically diverse from its inception, but he maintains nonetheless that the party has offered a consistently national conservative profile. He suggests that Fidesz and Prime Minister Orbán have been in the crosshairs of left-wing and liberal parties ever since the early 1990s, when Fidesz did not join the left-liberal opposition when it mobilized against the Antall government.
