EP debate on Hungary

February 2nd, 2019

A pro-government commentator describes the debate within the European Parliament on Hungary as a pathetic farce attended only by a handful of MEPs.

Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry suggests the debate on the state of democracy in Hungary was a platform created for representatives of the Hungarian opposition ahead of the European Parliamentary elections. Most of the roughly dozen MEPs who attended, she remarks, were Hungarians. They were joined by Commissioner Frans Timmermans and Judith Sargentini, author of a report condemning the Hungarian Government, who initiated the debate. Őry suggests that similar debates might be staged in many member countries, in France, for instance, where police regularly shoot rubber bullets at demonstrators, sometimes causing eye-injuries, she adds. She believes the Hungarian government was right to refuse to participate in such a meaningless debate.
