Ruminations on Pittsburgh synagogue shooting

November 1st, 2018

A left-wing commentator blames the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre on right-wing politicians and media. A conservative pundit thinks that the US has lost its claim to being the exception.

Népszava’s Gábor Horváth blames the bloody attack on right-wing politicians. The left-wing commentator thinks that the anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic discourse in the media and on the internet foment hatred. Horváth finds it absurd that US President Trump has called for armed guards to protect synagogues rather than taking responsibility for what happened.

On Mandiner, László Bernát Veszprémy thinks that the notion of American exceptionalism lost all its credibility after the Pittsburgh massacre. In the conservative pundit’s interpretation, the anti-Semitic attack shows that America is no different from European countries, can no longer claim the moral high ground, and should pay attention to growing domestic anti-Semitism rather than criticizing other countries. As for the implications of the attack, Veszprémy predicts that the US will become increasingly hostile to Jews, as the Left embraces an anti-Israeli discourse and the Right becomes concerned about white identitarian issues.
