PM Orbán at the EU summit

October 20th, 2018

A pro-government columnist welcomes the Prime Minister’s insistence on stopping illegal migration through border control, and instead of admitting refugees, helping people in need in their own homelands.

In a Facebook video, PM Orbán said that he had defended Hungary’s right to protect its own borders. He added, however, that the disputes over migration in the EU are not yet over.

In Magyar Hírlap, Mariann Őry welcomes Prime Minister Orbán’s efforts to stop migration and resist plans for refugee redistribution in the EU. The pro-government commentator finds it reassuring that Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz acknowledged that solidarity in migration issues does not necessarily entail the admission of migrants, but member states can also meet their obligations through other means, including the defense of the EU’s external borders. Őry points out that this approach is in-line with the Visegrad countries’ earlier proposals. Őry concludes by suggesting that the European Union should defend its borders and help potential refugees in their homelands rather than invite refugees and then redistribute them among EU members.
