An insider on the gossip about Fidesz agents within the Left

February 3rd, 2018

A veteran left-wing columnist criticises both George Soros and DK leader Ferenc Gyurcsány, for accusing unspecified left-wing personalities of conniving with the incumbent government.

In 168 óra, Ervin Tamás describes Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as ‘extremely resourceful’ at dividing his adversaries. During the late 1990s, he recalls, Mr Orbán managed to divide and then absorb all the other right-wing parties. More recently, he has been successful in dividing his left-wing opposition as well. Without elaborating on why he thinks that the fragmentation of the left-wing opposition is due to the Prime Minister’s manoeuvres, Tamás relates rumours about unnamed individuals within left-wing parties who have struck separate deals with those in government. He suggests that they have not been unmasked because party leaders did not want to impair their party’s reputation. With similar considerations in mind, he condemns a statement by George Soros that the Socialist Party has been “bought off” by the Prime Minister (see BudaPost, January 29). Nor does he approve Mr Gyurcsány’s remark that all parties have made deals with the government, except his own (see BudaPost, January 31). By falling into the government’s trap, he writes, ‘they are themselves becoming part of the charade’.
