One million non-resident Hungarians naturalized

December 19th, 2017

A pro-government commentator writes that PM Orbán’s government has restored the unity of the Hungarian nation through making citizenship available for Hungarians living beyond the borders.

Non-resident citizenship introduced by the Orbán government has restored the symbolic unity of a nation torn apart by the 1920 Trianon Peace Treaty, Magyar Hírlap‘s Sándor Faggyas comments on the naturalization of the one millionth Hungarian living beyond Hungary’s borders. The pro-government columnist asserts that non-resident citizenship strengthens the national identity and solidarity of Hungarians living in the homeland as well as outside the country. Cooperation with Hungarians beyond the borders helps the nation in fighting internal and external foes, Faggyas believes. He hopes that the unity of the Hungarians will be further bolstered by non-resident voters’ participation in the 2018 April Parliamentary election. Faggyas concludes suggesting that the votes from transborder Hungarians may even tip the balance of the election.
