Olympics referendum lacks support of Left

February 15th, 2017

A left-wing commentator lambasts the MSZP and the DK for criticising the initiators of a referendum on Budapest’s bid for the 2024 Olympics, and accuses them of playing into the government’s hands.

On Kettős Mérce, András Jámbor is outraged by the wave of condemnation emanating from left-wing circles towards the Momentum movement, which is trying to collect the 138 thousand valid signatures required for a local referendum on Budapest’s bid for the 2024 Olympic games. He calls the initiative (See BudaPost, February 1) ‘one of the most promising opposition moves of the past seven years’and dismisses attacks on the initiators as destructive. He mentions DK politician Attila Ara-Kovács by name, for calling Momo leader András Fekete-Győr a ‘new Orbán’ and describing Momentum as ‘Fidesz 2.0’. Jámbor himself dismisses Fekete-Győr’s statement that ‘the Left lacks a sane national conscience’. He doesn’t share Momo’s hope that an opposition party can be built which is neither left-wing nor right-wing. But he suggests that such divergences should be discussed after 4 p.m. on Friday by which time the signatures collected have to be deposited in the offices of the National Electoral Bureau. He praises those Socialists who collected signatures on behalf of Momo and exhorts the rest of them and DK activists to do the same. If they won’t, he will consider them to be ‘Fidesz’s useful idiots’.
