Botka nominated by MSZP to lead opposition campaign

December 24th, 2016

As the Socialist Party nominates Szeged Mayor László  Botka as the left-wing candidate for the post of Prime Minister in 2018, opinions sharply diverge on his chances.

In Magyar Hírlap, Tamás Pindroch describes  Mr Botka  as an arrogant person who is disliked even within the Socialist Party. The Democratic Coalition will find it difficult to support him, Pindroch remarks, because Mr Botka famously said that the Left cannot win an election with DK leader Ferenc  Gyurcsány.

On 888, József György Horváth finds László Botka overly ambitious. “The issue at stake is not who will be the MSZP candidate, but whether the MSZP will still exist in 2018”, he writes.

In Népszava, György Sebes believes that Mr Botka is a  trustworthy person who has proven his talent as a leader in Szeged where the left won two thirds of the seats in the city council two years ago. He quotes Botka’s words to the effect that he has ‘a gut feeling that the 2018 election is winable’, and calls on those Socialists who share that feeling to join the Mayor of Szeged and opt for a new policy to replace the one that “hasn’t led anywhere”.
