The Hungarian Right and anti-Americanism

November 27th, 2015

A conservative pundit dismisses right-wing accusations which hold the US responsible for the current migration crisis and even the Paris terrorist attack. A pro-government commentator, on the other hand, wonders why the US has failed to inform its European counterparts of the terrorist threat.

Mandiner’s Gergely Szilvay finds it disappointing that many on the Hungarian Right blame the US for the refugee crisis and even the Paris terrorist attacks. The conservative analyst thinks that right-wing commentators sometimes even suggest that the US deliberately created chaos in the Middle East to destabilize Europe through migration. Szilvay dismisses these accusations as “popular conspiracy theories” that exaggerate the role of the US. In an aside, Szilvay notes that such anti-American discourse is common on the Left, while in Hungary it is the Right that seems to be buying into these ideas.

The link between terror threats and mass migration is inevitable, Ottó Gajdics writes in Magyar Idők. The pro-government columnist believes that US secret services had information on the extremists of the Paris massacre long before they perpetrated their acts of terror. Gajdics thinks that one does not need to buy into conspiracy theories to wonder why the US failed to inform its European counterparts of the security threat these people pose.
