Hungary misrepresented abroad?

July 3rd, 2015

A pro-government commentator complains that the western press relays a false picture of what is happening in Hungary and castigates efforts by the Hungarian government to protect itself – and Europe – from the current wave of mass migration.

In Napi Gazdaság, Zoltán Kottász says the mainstream western media tends to portray Hungary as a hotbed of racial hatred and homophobia. Prime Minister Orbán is often depicted as someone building a dictatorship and most recently a new Iron Curtain.

Europe had better realise at last that Hungary is making a huge effort in order to protect the European Union by erecting a fence along the common European border. After all, he writes, it is Hungary’s duty not to let illegal immigrants cross into the borderless Schengen zone. The plight of the migrants is tragic, Kottász admits, but Europe cannot become a huge refugee camp. The multicultural model has already created dangerous tensions in many countries. This is why, he concludes, Hungary is acting in Europe’s best interest when it tries to slow down the migration wave along its southern borders.
