Left seen in a hopeless situation

January 12th, 2018

A left-wing sociologist thinks that the Left has little chance of boosting its popularity before the 8 April election, as it lacks a credible vision as well as charismatic leaders.

In Népszava, Pál Tamás deems it unlikely that the Left could represent a real challenge to the government in the Parliamentary election next April.  In the absence of a coherent ideology or charismatic leaders, the left-wing sociologist points out, the opposition can only mobilize its voters by launching personal attacks againstPrime Minister Orbán and focusing on single issues – first and foremost, corruption. To make the situation even more difficult for the Left, the opposition parties would need to promise large scale reforms in order to reverse the Orbán government’s policies, but at the same time, they would also need to re-assure the public that they would strengthen stability. Tamás believes that the Left will not manage to have the best of both worlds..
