European Parliament committee endorses mandatory migrant quota plans

October 23rd, 2017

A pro-government columnist contends that the EU proposal to introduce mandatory migrant redistribution quotas is a grave threat to Europe as well as Hungary.

On Thursday, the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament backed the proposal to impose mandatory refugee distribution quotas. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council dismissed the plan and said that mandatory quotas have no future in the EU.

In Magyar Idők, Bálint Botond condemns the mandatory quota proposal as an existential threat to the European Union. The pro-government columnist interprets the scheme as an open invitation to anyone who wants to live in Europe. If it is voted into law and ‘migrants’ are automatically redistributed in the EU, the internal borders will soon be closed, Botond cautions. He speculates that in order to keep migrants in the poorer EU member states to which they are allocated, western EU countries will need to close off their borders. In addition,, he continues, as a result of uncontrolled mass migration, Hungarians may soon become a minority in their own homeland. In a bitter closing remark, Botond writes that Hungary cannot expect anything good from the European Union if it abandons its core principles.
