Migrants found dead in a lorry

August 29th, 2015

Népszabadság urges more inclusive attitudes towards migration in order to avoid tragedies caused by ruthless human traffickers.

In a front-page editorial, Népszabadság predicts that efforts by the Austrian authorities to prosecute human traffickers more severely will be an inadequate response to the tragedy in which several dozens of refugees were found in a lorry in Austria several days after they suffocated to death. The force that drives these people from war stricken Syria is irresistible and they will shrink from nothing in order to get to the West. Népszabadság understands that closing borders in self-defence may seem to be the solution, but believes that ultimately this will play into the hands of human traffickers. The left-wing daily suggests that Europe should instead open its gates to refugees and meanwhile do more in order to put an end to wars in the Third World.
